"FABC is calling upon the entire UAS community to UNITE and "BE" the artistic agents of "Creative Action" to reinforce UAS's mission for our students to "BE" caring individuals, critical thinkers and responsible global citizens.
As an end result of uniting the entire UAS community for several months in the "BE" campaign, we will create an actual Mural at our school where many UAS entities (students, classes, clubs, teachers, organizations, etc) will each contribute artistically on what they choose to "BE". The Mural will be in the style of pop artist Keith Haring's silhouette figures. Each contributing UAS entity will adopt a silhouette and paint it according to its "Call for Creative Action".....In this case, the journey is truly greater than the destination. It is in the "learning process" that each group will demonstrate that it truly nurtured caring individuals, critical thinkers and responsible global citizens.
Maybe this is best demonstrated by a an example....
Let's say a teacher notices that there are a few new kids who are left out and she would like her students to think about this and take action to correct it. The teacher along with her class decide that the action should be to include others when they seem lonely. The "BE" slogan to achieve this might be : "BE A FRIEND". The goal within the class is for the students to make a conscious effort to include all the loners. The means to promote that goal collectively for that class could be to dedicate a "BE A FRIEND" day.... where each student will offer a heart shaped cookie and spend the recess with someone whom they don't normally spend it with. The final artistic product that symbolizes this "learning process" will be a silhouette that the class will adopt on the Mural in which they will join all their colorful hand prints together to signify "BE A FRIEND"...
A parent could sponsor a class or their family could do a creative action project, or just the mural. Say they love soccer and want to promote the team spirit that comes from being part of a sports team. They could do "Be a part of the team" and create a mural of soccer themed items. Or a family has been touched by serious illness and wants to tell others to "Be Brave". The PYP goals also fit into this, such as "Be a Risk Taker" or "Be Tolerant". Any direction you want to take it in, it will work. The idea is to involve all facets of the school and everyone's passion to collaborate on a project for UAS that "takes creative action".
