On May 9, a small group of astronomy enthusiasts at UAS Middle School accompanied their 7th grade science teacher Judy
Sweeney, to view the Mercury Transit at Mushrif Park.
The Dubai Astronomy Group organized the event with a plethora of telescopes and other gear to watch this exciting event. In grade 7 science, students are studying space, so the timing of the transit was perfectly aligned with the science topic being studied.
It was a true pleasure for everyone who attended to be able to witness Mercury visibly pass in front of the Sun. It is an astrological event which takes place approximately every 10 years. This will be the first such event in 10 years with the previous having taken place in 2006. In her science classes, Sweeney mentioned that the next time this would happen the students would be 22 -23 years old.
In class today, Sweeney announced that the Dubai Astronomy Group has an open invitation to UAS students who would like to attend any of their events in the future.
